Clover Club

in Gin

I finally broke down and bought a cocktail shaker (my previous shaking method involved a pint glass and a tupperware lid). I’ve been meaning to order a Boston shaker since I can’t seem to find one in stores. In the short term, I got an inexpensive number from the world market.

To break in my shaker, I wanted to try a drink that incorporated egg whites. I have at least been smart enough to know I shouldn’t try this at home with my makeshift shaker method.

After perusing my new copy of Good Spirits, I settled on the Clover Club, which has been on the list of drinks to try for a while.

Clover Club
1 1/2 oz gin (Van Gogh)
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz grenadine (i used syrop of grenadine liqueur)
1 egg white

Put ingredients in shaker, give a first shake. Add ice. Shake hard hard hard. strain into cocktail glass. Give yourself a moment to enjoy the nice foam on top.

Definitely worth it. It looked damn pretty in the glass, and tastes nice, to boot. Like in the pisco sour, the egg white gives a nice body to the drink. I’ve really warmed to the taste of Vincent van Gogh gin. Straight I find it a little hard to take, although my palate isn’t sophisticated enough to tell you what ingredient(s) are bothering me, but the more I mix with it, the more I’m really enjoying it. But now the bottle is almost gone!

I am extremely fond of my Oneida 18/8 stainless cocktail shaker. It is much better than the OXO Good Grips one that is also kicking around the house. Perfect fit of parts, gleaming mirror finish, dishwasher-safe, never corrodes, and frosts up nicely when you shake something over ice. Built in strainer is just the right mesh, and the top is a handy jigger measure, with a handy flat spot so it sits level on the counter. Overall just spectacularly good design.

that is a nice looking shaker. i am also tempted by the screwpull that Kathryn recommends. would be nice to be able to pick one up and see how it feels before committing, of course.
