If I Could Only Have 10 Bottles

Over at Kaiser Penguin, Rick has posed a challenging question:

If you could only have 10 bottles of alcohol, what would they be? You have to name brands, and you must include vermouths if you want them. They are, at least, infinitely replenishable.

I tried to focus on my favorite cocktails, and favorite categories of cocktails, as I made my decisions. I must have at least one scotch, mixable or not. I have to have my Manhattans. And I give up the ability to have something approximating a mai tai in order to have Pisco sours.

So here’s my list. At least, today’s list. Who knows about tomorrow?

  1. No. 209 Gin
  2. Cointreau
  3. Lillet Blanc
  4. Vya sweet vermouth
  5. Pisco Biondi Italia
  6. Isle of Jura Scotch
  7. Havana Club rum
  8. Luxardo Maraschino
  9. Green Chartreuse
  10. Ridgemont Reserve 1792 bourbon

What would be on your list?

There has to be something better than Cointreau for an orange liqueur, right? I struggled with not including one.

You’re right.

Now I’m going to have to do a Jay Hepburn style orange liqueur tasteoff.

Aguardiente Antioqueño
Havana Club
Grey Goose
Chartreuse (i can’t remember if i preferred green or yellow)
Umm… this killer soju that comes in a light blue pear-shaped bottle which name i cannot find
Clase Azul tequila

I guess that’s 7. Since the rules say “bottles of alcohol” and not merely “liquor”, i’ll include wine and beer:

Château d’Yquem
Tokaji Aszú Essencia
Lindeman’s cassis lambic

1. Aberlour a’bunadh – by a landslide.
2. Eagle Rare 10 yr
3. Hendrick’s gin
4. Noilly Prat dry vermouth
5. Cinzano sweet vermouth – I’m willing to be convinced about the Vya
6. Puerto Vallarta reposado
7. Cointreau
8. 1982 Chateau Margaux, or 1976 Chateau Lafite, or similar
9. Perrier-Jouet, flower bottle, any good vintage
10. d’Yquem, any good vintage

I could definitely live with your 10 bottles too, though.

If I could still drink beer, I’d add a magic bottle of the Munich-style lager I brewed from scratch in 1994, that would automatically refill itself when it was empty. That was the best beer I’ve ever had.

There is something better: Rhum Clement Creole Shrubb. It’s Cointreau with double the win.

I struggled with whether to add a Pisco myself. I’ve only started drinking Pisco Sours myself in the last month or so, but I do loves them. I left it off in favor of the insanely expensive Johnny Walker Green because, well, Kaiser said free refills!
